My Pocket Square Draw
The Pocket Square (No it’s not a Handkerchief) is one of the most important accessories a man can have. I don’t believe you can be labeled a “Dapper” dresser without one. Thankfully today I see more and more men wearing pocket squares yet it is not nearly enough.
Why is a square piece of silk, satin, or cotton so important? Because is brings to life what otherwise would be just another plain sport jacket or suit. Start wearing one and see how many people compliment the way you look.
Most men I speak to say they don’t wear because they don’t know how to fold it and they don’t want to look stupid by not having it folded properly. I say don’t worry about that, because it is really easy to fold and to fold it properly.
I have been wearing a pocket square everyday for at least 25 years and about 95% of the time I fold it this way:
- Lay the pocket square on a flat surface and pinch the middle with your right thumb and index finger and lift
- From the top wrap your left index finger and thumb around the pocket square and move down about halfway of the length of the pocket square and fold it in half
- Insert the folded pocket square into the jacket pocket and leave about an inch sticking out the top of the pocket
- Pull the edges of the pocket square outward to create the perfect fold
Some basic rules regarding pocket squares:
- When wearing a jacket Always wear a pocket square
- The Pocket square should either match the shirt or enhance the tie. Never have the pocket square match or be the same pattern as the tie.
How to get started
I recommend going to Men’s Warehouse (no need for Bergdorf Goodman yet) they have satin pocket squares in assorted colors for about $15 to $20 each. You should start with solid colors they are the easiest to match. For starters purchase a white, beige, red, and blue. This will give you plenty of options until you get comfortable wearing one and folding it.
